Pen and Ink

Having done a number of works featuring the scenery surrounding Capernwray Hall, I finally got round to capturing the building itself. In this view of "the castle", the observer looks down towards the rear entrance of the building, just down from the dining hall. This is the first time I have done the majority of a work painting with ink. I decided to use this method so that the flagpole on top of the tower could be made visible without using obvious outlining with a pen.

Miss Marple’s Tea Room is one of the icons of the Dandenong Ranges in Melbourne. The quaint Tudor-style restaurant is situated on the main street of Sassafras. It is a cozy place to eat and is very popular with tourists. Photographs of the famous crime-solver “Miss Marple” line the walls. This piece is the largest black & white pen drawing I have done so far.

Coonara Springs is the name of a restaurant in Olinda. The building is quite charming. Walking to the front door, you would not know that behind the property is the most magnificent view looking down into the Yarra Valley. I have had a number of outings to Coonara Springs, and I can still taste the delicious lemon tart!

This is the first drawing I have done that includes two houses. The house is situated in Kensington. Interestingly, the house is identical to the “manse” that my dad lived in as a child. It seems to have been a popular design.

This piece marks a turning point for me in my art. Here I began to achieve a rhythm in my pen strokes and paid closer attention to the role of light.

This drawing is probably the most technically challenging work that I have done. Drawing circular shapes is not easy. It depicts one of the most famous steam engines in the world.

This drawing is one of several that I have done of “The Thousand Steps” in the Dandenong Ranges National Park at Upper Ferntree Gully.

The largest piece I have done so far featuring “The Thousand Steps” in the Dandenong Ranges National Park, at Upper Ferntree Gully, the dappled light falls gently on graceful fern fronds.
