Watercolour and Pen

This is the third work I have done based on the Rhododendron Gardens in Olinda. As I was nearing the end of my walk there I noticed brilliant autumn colour shimmering behind the shadowy trees nearby. There is a sense of expectation about the scene, as if the viewer is “drawing near” to something wonderful or perhaps something wonderful is drawing near to the viewer.

The Alfred Nicholas Gardens are a hidden gem tucked away in The Dandenong Ranges. The gardens are quite extensive and fuel the imagination. In such places you cannot help but feel wooed by the surrounding beauty.

I’m a big fan of afternoon light and this scene, just below the Kalorama Lookout, is flooded with it. The Australian “green and gold” feature strongly.

This is the second work I have done based on the Rhododendron Gardens in Olinda. This scene depicts the “Kurume Bowl” - a section of the gardens devoted to kurume azaleas.

The Rhododendron Gardens in Olinda are known for their colourful floral displays but even in winter they have a beauty well worth seeing. This picture depicts a scene flooded with the “glorious light” of a winter’s afternoon.

Sherbrooke Road in the Dandenongs boasts some inspiring stretches of “autumnal splendour”. This scene is not far from “Poet’s Lane” Reception Centre.

This scene could be anywhere. It is actually of a sunlit tree in a park in Olinda. It is not an iconic image, but one of those eye-catching scenes that just had to be captured.

This artwork features a scene in the Dandenong Ranges National Park at Upper Ferntree Gully. This was my first attempt at a landscape using watercolour with pen-work. I love the background which shimmers like a piece of silvery satin. The viewer is enticed into the picture by the earthy path disappearing into the light.

Alongside Werribee River, west of Melbourne, are long stretches of walking tracks. This large tree is one of many ghostly gums that line the banks of the river. The greens and golds, so often associated with Australia, give a cheery welcome as the sun beats down on the spreading gum.
